The Director, Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) coordinates activities and organizational initiatives that enable VCU Health System to be recognized within the healthcare community. This position is responsible for providing operational, administrative, financial leadership and oversight to the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This position reports to the Senior Administrator, Ambulatory Surgery Centers and will oversee operations and functions of the surgery center and the clinical nursing manager. Working closely with the clinical manager this position ensures Care is delivered in an environment that is healthy, healing, and respectful to all patients, visitors, and staff. In addition, this role serves to ensure quality customer service to patients of all ages, their families, visitors, medical staff, clinicians, and co-workers, ensuring that everyone will be treated courteously, quickly, and with respect. This position is also responsible for ensuring services rendered are aligned and support the concepts of high reliability organizations and accurately complies with internal and external regulatory and accreditation guidelines. Essential Job Statements Regulatory Compliance Summary Ensures all facilities and departments meet regulatory, accreditation, and licensure requirements (including JCAHO, DNV, and ASC standards) while staying current with legislative and industry changes. Oversees quality improvement and performance initiatives by selecting meaningful indicators, incorporating best‑practice benchmarks, and engaging staff in process design to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Addresses all regulatory, safety, infection control, and operational concerns, maintaining accurate policies and protocols. Upholds compliance with state and federal regulations as well as professional guidelines such as AORN, AAMI, ASHRAE, and fire/life safety standards to support safe, high‑quality perioperative operations. Financial Management Effectively controls costs through economical utilization of personnel, materials and equipment as evidenced by, submitting, and managing department budgets within designated timelines and resources. Is fiscally accountable for controllable variances. Utilizes financial resources within established budget. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and equipment to meet demands of department.  Monitors charges and recommends changes when appropriate. Establishes and monitors department capital equipment long-term plan (3 years) for ongoing operational effectiveness. Maintains positive variance to budget on a volume adjusted basis. Maintains an environmental control plan, oversees materials management, and supports ongoing monitoring activities to ensure smooth, safe, and effective facility operations. Quality Improvement & Evidence ‑ Based Practice Summary Supports continuous quality improvement by monitoring patient, resident, and employee satisfaction data and collaborating with the team to adjust programs based on identified needs. Consistently meets patient satisfaction targets and organizational employee‑satisfaction goals while implementing and evaluating customer service initiatives. Leads ASC QAPI activities and facilitates ongoing performance improvement across the organization. Clinical Services Summary Oversees the delivery of clinical and surgical services to ensure full compliance with regulatory and accrediting body standards. Collaborates with the Medical Director and Medical Executive Committee to evaluate, enhance, and develop both existing and new surgical programs. Manages key clinical departments—including nursing, central supply, medical records, and housekeeping—and supervises contracted services such as laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, laundry, and biomedical engineering. Ensures surgical and patient‑care equipment is properly maintained through monitoring, vendor coordination, and timely repair follow‑up. Identifies opportunities to introduce new services appropriate for an ambulatory surgery center while maintaining a strong understanding of the ASC’s fiscal responsibilities. Miscellaneous Responsibilities: Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects in order to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department. Patient Population: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.  Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to  their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
