Reporting to the Head of Biotechnology Platform, the Senior Lead Scientist will act as the technical engine of the platform, providing deep scientific expertise, shaping experimental plans, managing external research execution, and translating results into actionable insights that feed the innovation pipeline. Where You’ll Make a Difference Technical Leadership & Experiment Design Define experimental strategies and study designs in enzyme engineering, microbial strain development, and metabolic pathway optimization executed externally. Provide detailed protocols, hypotheses, assay designs, and downstream processing. Ensure scientific rigor in data generation, reporting, and documentation from outsourced work. External Project Execution & Partnership Coordination Act as the technical lead for projects conducted with academic groups, startups and technology providers. Monitor progress through regular technical reviews, data checks, and milestone evaluations. Ensure alignment between external partner capabilities and internal scientific objectives. Innovation Pipeline Contribution Support the evaluation and prioritization of biotechnology opportunities based on feasibility, risks, and technical barriers. Deliver strong technical packages that enable decisions at each project stage-gate. Cross-Functional Technical Collaboration Work closely with Discovery chemists to evaluate hybrid chemo-bio routes and develop technically sound biotechnology based steps. Collaborate with analytical, process development and sensory to ensure data quality and fragrance ingredient requirements are fully met. Provide technical input for cost modeling and early process design. What Makes You the Right Fit PhD in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related discipline. 5+ years of experience in the field applied to the biosynthesis of chemical structures. Experience with enzyme engineering, microbial host optimization, fermentation scale-up, and DSP fundamentals. Skilled in analytical interpretation (GC-MS, LC-MS, chiral chromatography, impurity profiling). Strong scientific rigor, critical thinking, and ability to guide complex technical programs executed remotely. Clear scientific communication; ability to translate needs into actionable plans for external teams. Collaborative mindset and ability to work across chemistry, biology, and process development. Fluent in Mandarin and English. Willingness to travel across China and Asia (20–40%) for partners, sites, and scale-up activities. How Would You Stand Out?
