Job Title: Visiting Assistant Professor of Health Equity     Department: Urban Studies    Job Description: Rhodes College invites applications for a three-year non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor with expertise in population health and preference for ability to teach spatial approaches, to begin in Fall 2026. This is a health equity–centered position that supports the Health Equity major, housed within the Department of Urban Studies. The successful candidate will also contribute to the general Urban Studies curriculum through instruction in spatial methods (GIS, mapping, and/or basic spatial analysis). We are seeking a candidate whose research and teaching address population-level health outcomes, health equity, and spatial analysis. We welcome applicants from public health, epidemiology, geography, or related fields. Thematic focus is open—environmental health, chronic or infectious disease, overdose, climate and health, or health systems—so long as the work contributes to understanding and addressing health disparities at the population level. The teaching load for this position is 3/3, which includes a methods course cross-listed for Health Equity and Urban Studies (e.g., GIS, spatial analysis, epidemiological methods), an introduction to Health Equity course, a senior seminar course, and electives aligned with the candidate’s research and applied interests. There will be opportunities for community-based teaching and mentorship of student research. Health Equity and Urban Studies are interdisciplinary majors with a shared administrative home. Faculty and students in both programs work closely with Memphis organizations on applied research and long-term partnerships. The programs prepare students to understand and challenge racial, spatial, and health inequities through data, policy, and public-facing work. This position strengthens Health Equity’s capacity to train students in spatial and population health methods, while contributing methodological support to Urban Studies. Rhodes is a nationally ranked residential college committed to the liberal arts and sciences. Our highest priorities are intellectual engagement, community excellence, service to others, and honor among ourselves. Our students live and learn on one of the country’s most beautiful campuses, located in the heart of Memphis, an economic, medical, and culturally diverse center, making Rhodes one of a handful of prominent liberal arts colleges in a major metropolitan area. We are an equal opportunity employer that does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, national origin, religion, age, disability, genetic information, or other protected characteristics. A complete application will include 1) a cover letter that addresses the strengths the candidate will bring as a teacher and scholar to a liberal arts college environment; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a separate statement that addresses how the candidate will foster an inclusive learning environment where students from a wide variety of perspectives, beliefs, and backgrounds learn how to engage in civil and respectful dialogue. Also, you must include the following under Additional Documents: 4) Teaching Philosophy Statement. Review of completed applications will begin March 15, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. Letters of recommendation will only be solicited for short-listed applicants, at which time you will be prompted for the names and contact information for three (3) references. Background checks are required before candidates can be brought to campus for interviews. Contact Peter Hossler at hosslerp@rhodes.edu with any questions.
