If you have a burning desire to make an impact and want to work in a startup-like environment backed by the strength of Airbus, this is your opportunity to fly the most challenging missions anytime, anywhere.     The UAS (Uncrewed Aerial Systems) Perception Lead (M/F) position is within Airbus UpNext Spain, based in Getafe, starting ASAP, and it consists of a limited contract linked to the deliverable of the demonstrator - estimated completion date end of December 2028.   Main responsibilities: Perception and Situational Awareness Function:  Direct the perception stack lifecycle (AI/ML training, fusion, and validation) to meet safety-critical standards for autonomous obstacle avoidance and situational awareness. UAS Architecture Interface: Lead cross-functional integration of Perception with core UAS systems, ensuring seamless data flow between Navigation, Mission, and Flight Management. Systems Integration, Validation & Verification: Direct end-to-end systems integration and IV&V for airborne sensors and perception stacks. Lead the transition from HIL simulation and ground-based testing to successful flight-test operations. Safety and Assurance: Lead the Safety and Assurance Strategy for the Perception function, ensuring a robust approach to hazard analysis, mitigation, and the overall system safety case. Knowledge Capitalization & Handover: Contribute to the analysis and capitalization of all technical data, ensuring a complete and valuable technical handover of all project learning and operational assets at completion. Risks & Opportunities: Identify and analyze risks & opportunities affecting the development of the perception function, implementing corrective and preventive actions agreed within the project reviews. Boarding pass What you bring: Expert-level knowledge of airborne sensors (EO/IR, Radar, LIDAR) and the design of complex software pipelines for detection, recognition, and sensor fusion. Proven proficiency in AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch) and deep learning techniques for real-time perception and decision-making on embedded platforms. Extensive experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and the full V&V lifecycle. This includes requirements management, data engineering for AI, and the development of SIL/HIL simulation environments to validate autonomous functions. Demonstrated ability to navigate aerospace certification frameworks and standards (e.g., SORA, DO-178C/ED-12C concepts) as they apply to Detect and Avoid (DAA) and the validation/explainability of AI-enabled systems. Proven track record leading cross-functional teams in the integration and flight testing of autonomous UAS. Deep understanding of UAS airspace operations, mission management, and the deployment of high-integrity airborne computing platforms. Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary engineering teams, manage technical risks and make critical decisions in a fast-paced, agile technology development environment. A holistic, "big picture" systems thinking mindset with strong synthesis capacity and ability to translate high-level objectives into a concrete technical roadmap and complete set of detailed requirements. Strong English communication skills to champion the project’s technical vision to stakeholders and sponsors. Eagerness to take initiatives to propose simpler and efficient ways of working.
