Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary This role serves as a senior operational and research development lead within the Global Oncology Initiative (GOI), working closely with and reporting to the Director to oversee grant strategy, financial management, cross-departmental research development, and coordination of major domestic and international programs. The position plays a central leadership role in sustaining and expanding GOI’s NIH-funded portfolio, strengthening institutional collaborations, and leading implementation of the Initiative’s strategic plan. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Work with faculty, grants management team and scientific editors to ensure appropriate support of preliminary analyses and proposal development for timely submission of competitive funding opportunities, especially training and large project grants. Grants Strategy and Management Lead coordination of large NIH-funded grants, including ASCEND, ALTOR, LISN, and HIGH-IRI (cancer cohort). Provide oversight of training grants, ensuring compliance, milestone tracking, reporting, and budget management. Manage the grants pipeline, proposal development processes, and submission timelines. Interface with grants management teams to ensure accurate financial tracking and sponsor compliance. Cultivate relationships with new funding agencies to expand and diversify GOI’s research portfolio. Financial and Operational Oversight Oversee financial management across GOI projects, including budget monitoring and coordination with finance staff. Supervise the Program Coordinator responsible for scheduling, reimbursements, and administrative processes. Program Leadership and Coordination Serve as a central coordinating lead for multi-country initiatives. Promote and facilitate cross-departmental research collaborations across the university. Manage internal and external collaborations across WashU, KEMRI, and partner institutions. Lead implementation of GOI’s strategic plan and programmatic priorities. Track portfolio metrics, including grants, manuscripts, and other indicators of research success. Coordinate dissemination activities, including reports, manuscripts, and conference presentations. Partnership and Portfolio Growth Identify and pursue new funding opportunities aligned with GOI priorities. Work with development and institutional partners to communicate program impact and expansion opportunities. Interface with relevant university offices to support advancement of intellectual property and innovation initiatives. Core Competencies Demonstrated experience managing NIH-funded grants, including training mechanisms. Strong understanding of federal grants management and compliance. Ability to lead complex, multi-institutional programs. Strong financial oversight and organizational skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ensure operational systems support timely execution of multi-site activities. Lead continuous improvement efforts to strengthen research infrastructure and operational efficiency. Track grants, manuscripts, invited talks, etc., as metrics of research success. Oversee the coordination of shared departmental research resources, including tissue biobanks, data analysis support and cores. Promote departmental research and its research infrastructure at meetings and workshops to facilitate faculty recruitment and collaborations. Interface with the Office of Technology Management to protect and promote intellectual property developed in the department. Lead research operations-based investigations to improve the processes supporting the research divisions in the department. Work with the Development Office to communicate research projects for potential investments. Connect research staff to development opportunities, including relevant workshops and conferences. Work with faculty to recipients of training grants to ensure resources are available to measure success and meet milestones. Help the VCR develop relationships with new funding agencies to expand the department's research portfolio.
